Burnet’s Vance to play in Austin all-star baseball game
Burnet High School 2022 graduate Ralston Vance will represent the Bulldogs at the annual Austin Area Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Game at 6 p.m. Sunday, June 12, at Dell Diamond, 3400 E. Palm Valley in Round Rock.
Vance, who played different positions for the Bulldogs, was selected as a second baseman. The all-stars are those who graduated in 2022.
He was nominated by Burnet head coach Russell Houston, who provided hitting and fielding statistics.
“He played most of the season at second base,” Houston said. “I told him I nominated him. Then I had the pleasure of saying ‘congratulations. You’re going to make it.'”
Vance was one of hundreds from the greater Austin area nominated from schools in Classes 2A-6A. Players will play on rosters representing the north and the south.
“There’s roughly nine pitchers per team,” Houston said. “And there’s two positions for each position on the field per team. There’s 25 to 30 kids per team.”
Vance was an integral part of the Bulldogs’ lineup throughout the season. A first team All-District 19-4A selection as a utility player, Vance pitched seven scoreless innings in a game three loss to LaGrange in a bi-district best-of-three series. Burnet lost 1-0 in extra innings. Still, it was the Bulldogs’ first playoff appearance in about a decade. And their game one 8-0 win against the Leopards was Burnet’s first in about 14 years.
As for the all-star game, Vance will be playing with familiar athletes, Houston said.
“He’s playing with kids he played summer ball with,” he said. “They’re getting to play at Dell Diamond the Sunday after the state tournament.”
